Immigration bill passes first cloture vote.
In a blow to those who are holding out for a better immigration bill the U.S. Senate passed the first cloture vote today 64-35. Among those voting for cloture, I am sorry to say is Missouri Senator Kit Bond.
I am not quite sure why he voted for cloture - whether it was out of respect for President Bush or what.
What I do know is that there is a House GOP Conference meeting today at 5:30 eastern time held by Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI) to “disapprove” of the “Senate immigration bill.”
Congressman Roy Blunt (or congressman here in Southwest Missouri) will be in attendence and in support of enforcing the borders first.
Finally, Bluey at Redstate adds that the fight is not over and the second cloture vote which will be held on Thursday will be another important hurdle for the bill.
NRO adds that several senators may be persauded to vote against cloture. On their list is Senator Bond.
From my perspective, the bill is fatally flawed and may single handedly implode our country from a strain of social services and lowering of wages to granting the Democrats nearly 20 million new voters (which is meant to completely counter act any form of political pull conservatives - especially Christians - have).
Dont get me wrong, I am not for shipping everyone back in a single swift action.
Yet I believe that our borders must be secured and those who are here must not be rewarded and granted special reprieves (like back tax forgiveness).
Redstate gives a great top ten list of fatal flaws with the bill.
